Upper Red Lake Fishing Report
May 21, 2012
Hello from Mort at Mort's Dock & RV Campground. The nice weather on Friday made for one of the best fishing days so far with a number of limits coming in from five to eight feet on jigs w/minnow or hammered spinners & minnow. Of course the winds picked up Saturday & Sunday to limit angler activity. A few crappie reports from three to four feet and some pike caught by walleye fishermen.

Hello from Mort at Mort's Dock & RV Campground. Hard to believe but we have had three days with offshore winds. This has been good for fishing here on the south shore. Many limits have come in today with the best action in 5 to 8 feet of water. The walleye are hitting jigs w/minnow or a hammered silver spinner & minnow. Shiners or fatheads both working. We've had a few crappie reports from the shallows but not any consistency so far. The weather is to go wack on us by tomorrow sometime with some rain & winds turning to the west, we will see?! Hope for the best & FISH ON!!!!
May 15, 2012
Hello from Mort at Mort's Dock & RV Campground. The wind made for a tough opener on the lake, otherwise warm & sunny here onshore. Those willing to put in some time out in the waves were able to catch fish. It just was not fast & furious with the water all churned up after two to three days of wind. The fishing picked up a little yesterday as the lake was dead calm but is rolling again today. There were some walleyes caught in 10' or deeper but most were caught in 5 to 8' on a jig & minnow or spinner baits. HAVE A GREAT REST OF THE WEEK!!!
May 10, 2012
Hello from Mort at Mort's Dock & RV Campground. What a great past couple days, in the upper 70's today. Tomorrow sounds like cloudy and windy but improving quite a bit for Saturday am opener. The winds sound like WSW or SW for Sat-Sun. so it should make for good going off the south shore, we will see?! Lake levels are down a little this spring but most accesses should be in pretty good shape. Our launch here at MORT's DOCK is in great shape and our tanks full of shiners and fatheads so let's hope Mother Nature treats us right!! HAVE A SAFE AND ENJOYABLE 2012 OPENER!
May 7, 2012
Hello from Mort at Mort's Dock & RV Campground. Just days away from the walleye opener! If the weather cooperates the fishing should be very good with many post-spawn walleyes eager to feed up. The crappie have been slow for the most part with a few coming in from shallow water. They will most likely pick up as water temps increase a little more. Sucker fishermen have been finding some in the bigger creeks and ditches like upper Shotley Brook. The long range forecast sounds pretty good for this weekend, let's hope!!
May 2, 2012
Hello from Mort at Mort's Dock & RV Campground. Sucker fishing opened yesterday but with low water levels in most areas it was a tough go. The fish are in bigger creeks and are hard to get at for the most part. A few crappies starting to show in the shallows as water temps slowly warm up. Here at MORT'S DOCK we are getting ready for opener--the dock went in last weekend and the water to the campground will be turned on today. Let's hope Mother Nature gets the dreary weather out of the way so we can have a nice start to walleye season!?
April 23, 2012
Hello from Mort at Mort's Dock & RV Campground. The weather is having a hard time to warm up with cool, damp and a little snow over the weekend. It sure sounds as if the fish opener will stay at May 12, overall this is a good thing! The walleye are really just ready to spawn when we get some warmer temps. Water temps still in the upper 40's maybe low 50's on a good day. The crappie should move into the shallows soon also. HAVE A GREAT WEEK!!!
April 18, 2012
Hello from Mort at Mort's Dock & RV Campground. The weather has been more like March or early April with cool, windy, snow & drizzle of late. Thus the fishing activity has been minimul, we are hoping that with the conditions the walleye bite settles in closer to normal. It is looking like the opener will stay at May 12th unless the MN senate has a quick change of heart to move it up a week?! Right now just leaving it at is will probably be best and the walleye should still be pretty active! Everything should be decided quite soon--we will let you know if there is a move up of opener!! HAVE GREAT REST OF THE WEEK & WEEKEND!!!!!
April 9, 2012
Hello from Mort at Mort's Dock & RV Campground. There isn't much to report so far as the water temps remain in the upper 30's to low 40's. Cooler temps this week will not warm things up much either. We may see a few crappies starting to bite when water temps get into the upper 40's & low 50's. Northern pike have been running in the rivers & creeks the last week or two.
April 3, 2012
Hello from Mort at Mort's Dock & RV Campground. The ice left the lake a week ago March 27 which is a month earlier than normal. The water temps remain very cold so we will need them to climb quite a bit before the crappies start to hit in any numbers. They should start to cooperate somewhat earlier than most years because of the iceout that occurred the last week of March compared to late April or early May most years.
March 26, 2012
Hello from Mort at Mort's Dock & RV Campground. The ice is really soggy and moving around with the winds, what is left of the main ice pack is about a mile offshore today. It looks as if most will be gone in the next few days with strong offhore winds in the forecast. A March iceout will be a new modern record for Upper Redlake!!!
March 19, 2012
Hello from Mort at Mort's Dock & RV Campground. There are still a few anglers getting out picking up some nice numbers of keeper size perch in 10-14' depths. Most travel has been by ATV but with temps in the 70's this will not be an option much longer. Best to call your access point to check conditions if you have to travel any distance. STAY SAFE!!
March 5, 2012
Hello from Mort at Mort's Dock & RV Campground. The lake is pretty quiet now with just a few trying their luck at some keeper perch and the occaisional slab crappie. The 12 to 15' depths working for perch while the crappie come from the 15' mud flats. We have picked up eight plus inches of new snow over the last week so just a couple access points still open otherwise snowmobiles are the way to go.
February 27, 2012
Hello from Mort at Mort's Dock & RV Campground. The winter walleye-pike season came to an end this weekend. The bite was still slow on average with a few parties putting nice numbers in the pail. Even the perch & pike were just so-so. Very few fishermen on the lake Sunday as about 4" of new snow along with blustery winds made conditions pretty tough much of the day. Today would have been a much nicer day to close out things with sun & light winds. It did make it a good day for taking off fish houses. We were able to pull everything off and get houses tucked away into off-season storage. Again, a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who was able to spend some time with us here at MORT'S DOCK this winter, it was another enjoyable (and safe) season on Upper Red!!
February 23, 2012
Hello from Mort at Mort's Dock & RV Campground. There are just three days left in the winter walleye-pike season after today. Still a few good reports along with the slower action on the "eyes" with perch and pike providing a little activity also. The better action is still in 15' water with very scattered bite shallower around dark. We will see some of you this weekend for one last blast, but a BIG THANK YOU to all who spent a part of the winter with us here at Mort's Dock---it was another enjoyable season on Upper Red!!!!!!
February 21, 2012
Hello from Mort at Mort's Dock & RV Campground. The long Presidents Day Weekend is over and we woke up to 4 to 5" of new snow. Looks like I'll be plowing a few more times before the season ends this week- end. The walleye bite was again very spotty with some doing well with an average slow bite going on. Quite a few perch still going and many big pike reports over the weekend. Have a great week!!!!
February 17, 2012
Hello from Mort at Mort's Dock & RV Campground. Looks like mild temps with little to no snow for the Presidents Day Weekend. The walleye bite has been spotty at best but everyone is picking up some "eyes" along with a few perch. Just the rare crappie and the occaisional big pike. The 15' depths seem strongest and with the longer days the evening bite is now more like 6pm and later. Jigs and dead sticks both working at times. HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!!
February 13, 2012
Hello from Mort at Mort's Dock & RV Campground. The cold started to work it's way out of here yesterday with sunny & 20's with 30's in the forecast most all week. A few good walleye reports mixed in with an average slow bite. Quite a few perch still being caught, some small-some keepers. The 15' depths continue to be best for walleye & perch. Jigs are working for some but set lines are starting to catch fish thus the rattle reel action has picked up at night. Have a great week & remember your Valentine!!
February 10, 2012
Hello from Mort at Mort's Dock & RV Campground. Here's what is happening with fishing in my neck of the woods. The warm up they talked about got pushed back a day or two, now 20's by Sunday and maybe low 30's by early next week. The bite on walleye remains slow on average with a few good reports mixed in while the perch save the day for some fishermen. The 14-15' depths still seem to be best with some fish shallower near dark. Roads remain good with offroad travel still possible. Have a great weekend and STAY WARM!!
February 6, 2012
Hello from Mort at Mort's Dock & RV Campground. We went from fog "thick as pea soup" on Thursday & Friday to sunny & 40 degrees on Sunday. Supposed to be more normal as far as temps go this week but little to no new snow then warming to 30's again by next weekend...I'll take it! The bite on walleye overall was slower with some limits & nice numbers coming in here & there. Perch saved the day for some of the fishermen with quite a few keeper size being caught. We didn't see much on the crappie but some pike action reported. Most of the "eyes" and perch coming from the 15' mud flats on jigs w/minnow. HAVE A GREAT WEEK!!!!
January 30, 2012
Hello from Mort at Mort's Dock & RV Campground. Saturday started out snowy and windy as we got another two inches of the white stuff, Sunday, of course, turned calm and sunny. The overall walleye action was fairly slow but we did have a few put together nice numbers and limits. The 14-15' depths is still where most of the better action has been. Jigging with minnows or minnow heads is still doing better than set lines, thus the night bite on rattle reels has not been hot for too many fishermen. Sounds like mild temps are back this week, have a good one!!!!

THE BITE IS ON!! Lots of anglers reporting 30-80 fish a day! To stay safe out on the lake, don’t attempt to cross pressure ridges and listen to the access owners!
Keep a Tight Line!
December 13, 2011
Wow what a start of a season! Ice movement seems to have settled down and the walleye bite has slowed down a bit, but anglers still reporting limits. Finding them under 17" doesn't seem to be a problem for most. Setting up on the 9-10' breaks is where anglers seem to be producing the best numbers. Many reporting better numbers jigging with shiners. The past few days there's been an early morning bite with prime action happening from 2:00-3:30 p.m. Vehicle traffic has begun (many still sticking with 4-wheelers for now), but just remember that with no snow cover ice conditions can change rapidly. There are some big pressure ridges on the south end of the lake. Fishing near them as in past years doesn't seem to be producing like usual – but that could change next week. Worth driving up! Be Safe and Keep a Tight Line!
August 23, 2011
The leech bite is still going strong! Catching your limit? Definitely! Oh—and we haven't heard of any 45" northern pike being caught lately – LOL! Keep a Tight Line!
August 16, 2011
The walleye bite is ON!!! Anglers are producing excellent numbers using jigs tipped with minnows or pulling leeches. You'll have your limit (wind permitting) within a few hours. Keep a Tight Line!
July 7, 2011
The bite on Upper Red Lake has started to turn on again! Anglers are beginning to catch good numbers of walleye once again, trolling with a jig and a minnow. As soon as anglers get a few, they have been GPSing the spot, and casting with jigs and minnows trying to stay on the schools. Keep a Tight Line!
June 13, 2011
Anglers reporting numbers of walleye being produced have dropped significantly since the big wind storm that flooded the east side. The bite is tough. Keep a Tight Line!
May 26, 2011
PHENOMINAL WALLEYE BITE CONTINUES!! Anybody and everybody can reel in serious numbers of walleye simply by using a white jig tipped with a spot tail shiner, anchoring and pitching the jig, reeling it back, or trolling the shoreline if wind conditions permit (4-6' of water). Folks, all we can say is, "THE BITE IS ON!!" Keep a Tight Line!
May 17, 2011
Jigging on the 8' depth lines has been producing phenomenal results. Walleyes are snappin'! Lots of limits coming in the slot and lots of overs being reported. Reports sound to be 2 overs to 1 keeper—but walleyes are really puttin' their feed bag on. 1/8 and ¼ jigs - Chart, Orange & White producing crazy results tipped with shiner, rainbow or fathead – anglers' choice. Good luck up there. Be safe and Keep a Tight Line!
March 11, 2011
With traffic removed from the lake hearing of anglers still fishing for perch and, surprisingly, catching worthwhile numbers of crappies. Best numbers of crappies are being found along the north shore in 9-12’. No one is saying it’s a major crappie extravaganza, but a few are being found. Some groups reporting 3-5, and a few groups reporting near limits. Very light jigging with small minnows, working the fish up off the bottom, seems to be producing the best numbers. You’ll have to punch a lot holes to find ‘em!! Keep a tight line!

February 16, 2011
Patience still key to success! Putting in the time and staying mobile will pay off. Finicky bite continues. Lake driveable right up on top of the snow. Slush is disappearing on unplowed areas. Minnowheads on smaller jigs seem to be doing best, and deadsticking with small silver shiners also producing some numbers. Keep a tight line!
February 10, 2011
Fishing is not at a complete loss—contrary to what some anglers are reporting. Anglers who are putting the time and effort in are producing walleye. How diligent anglers are at watching Vexilars and working jigs has been determining a successful catch. The bite is very light. So, paying attention to your Vexilar and to the soft bite will produce better numbers. Center Bar has slowed down significantly. Staying away from the crowds, which is difficult with the snow and slush, in shallower waters (8-12') has been producing better numbers. Glow-red and glow-white rattling jigs, 16th oz, or other smaller jigs are working tipped with a small silver shiner. Working mud flats at the 12' mark where the mud meets the sand has been the ticket. Keep a Tight Line!
February 3, 2011
Cold snap ending and bite becoming more aggressive. Anglers reporting numbers in the high twenties 13-17' on a shiner or large fathead deadsticking. All-glow glass jigs becoming quite popular also. Jigging minnowheads seems to be producing more. Large northern pike turning on using tip-ups with ciscos or light northern with quick-strike rigs. Slush problems due to crowding.
January 29, 2011
Continued walleye action but at a slow pace. A lot of shows on the vexilar with no bites. Nice eaters do continue to be caught-should have no problem getting 4-fish limit within the slot. Glow jigs and rattling jigs are producing best results. Deadsticks still producing as well, but not the numbers. Don't crowd or you will FLOOD! Keep a tight line!
